During Nintendo's pre-E3 press conference today, Satoru Iwata presented to us a very unique feature of the Wii almost seamlessly while discussing Nintendo's target audience. The feature is called "WiiConnect24." Before I continue, I'd like to present a short anecdote.
Remember when SEGA said that A-Life (from NiGHTS) in your Saturn lives on even when the console is turned off?
Well, it's just like that, except it really lives!
Iwata stated that WiiConnect24 is a feature of Wii that will allow it to remain connected to the internet, even while it is turned off. It is a standby mode (much like the red light mode on PS2s) that will shut off most functionality of the Wii and consume as much power as a miniature light bulb. While in this standby mode, content can be fed directly to your Wii and the game being played in real-time; meaning updates from developers can be instantly transmitted to your game when you're asleep, people can visit your Animal Crossing village and make an impact (as described by Iwata) while you're at work, and many more possibilities are available. Iwata also stated that the networking software is built into the hardware, so there is very little impact on the programming end.
I personally think that this is a cool feature of the console that, when used effectively, will dramatically improve the way content is delivered to the home and will ultimately increase the availability of players online, especially in the case of games like Animal Crossing, where you don't have to be playing to be in the game.
