Video Feature: JediHD - Project Sylpheed Review Feature [Written 2007-09-18] |

Eric says: "Project Sylpheed for the Xbox 360 is a very appealing game for fans of the space flight combat genre, but the awkward controls and inconsistent difficulty will likely scare away people new to the genre. Targeting is clunky; cycling through targets in no apparent order, and even using the "target enemy in center of screen" function results in something NOT EVEN CLOSE to the center getting targeted. The throttle control is pretty nice, though. You can cut the power to your engines and keep going on inertia, allowing for cool strafing attacks against capital ships. I'll be honest: this game isn't that much fun on the first playthrough. Your ship is woefully underpowered for the first two-thirds of the campaign, and while you can unlock more powerful equipment as you play, the enemy ships get even tougher along with you, keeping the balance of power always tipped away from you. Once you unlock some of the powerful weapons late in the game, you can easily lay waste to almost anything that is thrown at you, making it more enjoyable, but way easier at the same time. Project Sylpheed is not for everyone; it requires patience with the clunky controls and initially punishing difficulty. People who have been waiting years for something in the space combat genre will do well to check out the demo on Xbox Live and see for yourself if you like Square-Enix's take on the space combat genre." Please note that Eric has encoded these super-crisp videos in MP4 format, which means you have to have an H.264 codec installed to watch them. If you have NO idea what that means, don't worry - there's a media player from VideoLAN called VLC Player that will play these without having you install any codecs. You can find it here: VLC Player In particular, the 1080p version is an absolute beast. I'll let Eric tell you what options you have himself: "You have a few options to watch the review: PC, PS3, 360, or PSP (3.30+). The videos are done in H.264, which is why the files are so small but still amazing looking. PC users need to have a codec installed that will decode X.264 properly; I recommend FFDShow. You can then play it in WMP or your video player of choice; VLC Player can play X.264 without a standalone codec, in case you don't want to mess with FFDShow!
I'm still investigating a way to stream .mp4 files to PS3 and 360 easily, so for now you need to either put the file onto a USB storage device, or burn it to a CD. 360 users will have to download the media compatibility update from Marketplace (free, it will prompt you to download it when you try to play the video) to enable playback if you haven't already. You only have to do that once. PSP users should put the video in the "VIDEO" folder in the root of the memory stick, firmware 3.30 or higher is required to play back the video!"
