"Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, the latest entry in the Call of Duty series, sets a new high watermark for console shooter games, mixing an engaging and well-written campaign with the most addicting multiplayer experience I’ve ever played. It’s head and shoulders above almost all other console shooters. You gain experience and level up as you play multiplayer games, unlocking additional equipment and perks. Perks are like abilities in the game and you can have up to three equipped at once. Some give you increased health or bullet damage, let you fire or reload faster, give you extra grenades, or even eavesdrop on the opposing team’s radio chatter. The perks add an element of strategy and customization that really liven up the multiplayer and add a ton of replay value. I do have some complaints about this game, though. While the single player is exciting most of the time, it is pretty short at around 5 to 6 hours to complete. It also has the same quirk with enemy respawns that the earlier games in the series had, where they keep respawning until you move up to a certain point to trigger the next set of spawning enemies. It works fine until you notice it, and frankly it just bugged the hell out of me. The multiplayer can also be incredibly frustrating to new players, since you are forced to play with people who are a higher level than you, and have better equipment and perks, which lead to an unfair advantage at first. The game also heavily rewards players who score lots of kills with air strikes and helicopter assistance, so a player with a slight lead can easily turn it into a blowout with a few lucky air strikes. Besides that, however, there are no other real balance problems, and players will learn to adapt to their equipment as they move up in the ranks. I can’t say enough good things about Call of Duty 4 – it combines a single player campaign that is full of replayability and plot twists, with a multiplayer experience that is unparalleled. I love this game so much that it is my Game of the Year for 2007, and I wholeheartedly recommend Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare for purchase."
