 Judge Steps on, Eats and Expunges Minnesota Game Law
:: Posted by MrCHUPON on 2006-07-31 ::
Remember back in May, when Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty thought he could get away with fining minors $25 for purchasing or renting games rated M for Mature or AO for Adults Only? Remember how the Entertainment Software Association and its president Doug Lowenstein filed a suit to get the bill stricken down?

Whether or not you remember, you are safe from having to pay $25 for your children who attempt to buy Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude. The law has been blocked by US chief district judge James M. Rosenbaum, who deemed the law unconstitutional in agreement with the Entertainment Software Association's suit.

According to Gamespot:

The state argued that the law would protect "the psychological well-being of minors" and foster "children's moral and ethical development." However, the judge's decision stated that the state failed to provide "empirical support for its belief that 'violent' video games cause psychological harm to minors."

This certainly isn't the first time an extremely questionable bill has been stricken down in court, and it definitely won't be the last. However, as more and more frivolous bills are signed into law by overzealous state officials, there may come a day where the damn breaks and one piece of abhorrent law slips through the cracks. For now, gamers can celebrate one more legal victory.
