New York City - On Wednesday, December 6th, 2006, the second annual "Funde Razor" fund raising event was held at Barcade (388 Union Avenue, Brooklyn, New York, www.barcadebrooklyn.com), raising over $2000 for charity.
Funde Razor, which raised over $1600 last year, was put together by Joel Johnson (www.joeljohnson.com), a freelance technology writer formerly of Gawker Media (www.gawker.com) and currently with Wired (www.wired.com). Both years the event has taken place in Barcade, a neighborhood bar with retro arcade games lined up against the walls and a staggering amount of beers on tap. The Funde Razor event is officially sanctioned by Child's Play Charity (www.childsplaycharity.org), an effort started by Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik of videogame web comic, news and opinion site Penny Arcade (www.penny-arcade.com) to donate cash, toys, videogames and books to children's hospitals worldwide.
The agenda for the night started off with free play of Guitar Hero II for the Sony Playstation 2, with bar patrons lining up after Mr. Johnson's initial welcome at 8:00 PM. The official raffle - dubbed "ROFL RAFL" - for which tickets could be purchased at $10 each, would begin over two hours later after gamers and drinkers alike rocked out. The grand prize for the raffle, won by Kevin Deiboldt was one of three custom, hand-crafted guitar controllers for Guitar Hero and Guitar Hero II, made from a real guitar shell and fret board by Joel Miller (www.jmillerid.com) and Chuck Cage (www.toolmonger.com).
Once the raffle was finished, the final official event for the night was a tournament in which 16 players faced off through three rounds and a finals round. The tournament prize was a Nintendo DS Lite. The winner of the tournament, who goes by the alias Tigerhawk310 on YouTube, easily handled the competition and capped off his run with a handy performance of Lynyrd Skynyrd's Freebird on Expert difficulty, amassing over 350,000 points against the runner-up, who scored just over 206,000 points.
Proceeds from the raffle will go directly to Child's Play. To donate to Child's Play, please visit www.childsplaycharity.org.
