In Depth Review: 2K Games Releases Free Holiday Add-on for Sid Meier's Railroads [PC]
From Firaxis' website:
"Greedy robber barons are encroaching on Santa's supply chain, taking over local industries, and leeching toys that were to be delivered to Santa's Workshop. Create and deliver large quanities of toys and supplies to Santa's Workshop while keeping your compeition at bay. Santa and the children of the world are looking to you to save Christmas!"
Perhaps more importantly for some gamers is that the team has also released a functionality patch, also available from Firaxis' download page, that corrects a number of bugs that affect performance and AI. To borrow directly from Firaxis again:
"This patch [numbered Version 1.10] corrects bugs related to AI, interface, functionality, performance, as well as crashing. It also includes the full map editor and many functionality and graphic improvements. Note: This patch is for all versions of Railroads! with the exception of the Direct2Drive version."
Some gamers may be reminded of Christmas NiGHTs, Sega's free expansion CD for NiGHTs into Dreams for the Sega Saturn that added two bonus, holiday-themed levels to the NiGHTs experience. While this holiday season sees a freebie for Railroads! junkies, it's the only holiday freebie we've heard of as of yet. Virtual Console downloads for Nintendo's Wii - Super Mario Bros., Toe Jam n' Earl and R-Type, which happen to arrive on Christmas day - will cost you the usual allotment of Wii points. There's no specially planned Xbox Live Arcade download, nor is there any indication that the Sony Store will do anything for Sony Playstation 3 owners. Perhaps the console bigwigs are planning to surprise their consumers. (Or, perhaps they haven't gotten used to the idea of playable freebies.)
